The Race for Jared Terrell Heats Up

Jared Terrell was released from his National Letter of Intent from Oklahoma State last week, and if he decides to attend Providence he would combine with Kris Dunn to give the Friars something they haven’t had in seemingly forever — a backcourt pairing that can physically dominate on the defensive end.

PC fans saw flashes of Dunn’s defensive potential during his freshman season — Ed Cooley believed he was the top defensive guard in the Big East prior to his season ending shoulder surgery this past year — and the 6’3, 225 pound Terrell has the physical tools to be an elite defender at the next level as well.

Terrell, a Weymouth, MA native, is reportedly now considering Boston College, Providence and Rhode Island, although Adam Zagoria reported Wednesday that he believes this is turning into a two team race between BC and PC.

For Providence, Terrell would be gravy for their 2014 class. Cooley has already landed three top 100 caliber recruits and added a commitment from Compton, CA point guard Kyron Cartwright this spring, while new BC head coach Jim Christian is in desperate need of bodies.

The Eagles are set to lose a pair of starters in Ryan Anderson and Joe Rahon, both of whom are transferring, and they don’t have a commitment yet for the class of 2014. BC can offer oodles of playing time, and Terrell would be running alongside Olivier Hanlan, who he played with at New Hampton for a season.

Providence fans are familiar with Terrell, of course. He’s been on PC’s radar since he played at Weymouth High School and then as he made his way to New Hampton and finally Brewster for the past two seasons. He’s regarded as at least a top 75-80 prospect by every major publication, and this past summer Providence made his final list of schools, although it became clear within a week or two of his decision that things weren’t trending towards the Friars.

Earlier this week, CBS’s Jon Rothstein reported that Terrell would visit Providence and BC next week, so this could come to a head soon.

Having seen Terrell anywhere from 15-20 times the past three seasons, the thought here is that if Terrell is to live up to his lofty rankings it will be as a defensive terror. He’s a very good athlete, as physically imposing as they come at the shooting guard spot, and he’s at his best when turning turnovers into offense. The last time I saw Terrell was during the NEPSAC AAA title game in which he helped lead Brewster back from 18 points down by coming up with five steals. His defense was perhaps the biggest factor in the turnaround, and he followed that game up by winning MVP of the National Prep Championship tournament the following week.

A Dunn/Terrell pairing would be limited offensively from the perimeter, as Terrell’s jump shot isn’t his strong suit, and he’s more of a straight line bull than shifty when taking the ball to the basket, but for five or six minute spells they could be a terrifying duo to try to score against — especially with the likes of Carson Desrosiers and Paschal Chukwu behind them.

The sense among national writers is that Terrell is leaning toward BC, and our staff will pass along any information on Terrell’s recruitment as we get it.
