Cotton’s Top Ten Games: #10 at DePaul

Friarbasketball.com takes a look back at the top ten games of Bryce Cotton’s senior season.

Game: February 2 at DePaul

Situation: The Friars were rolling heading into February, having won five of six games to close out January. Providence benefitted in some part thanks to a favorable schedule in which four of those five wins came at home, but February kicked off with three road games between the first and tenth of the month.

The first of those roadies came at DePaul on a Saturday afternoon. Providence raced out to a 16 point lead over a Blue Demon group going without All Big East performer Cleveland Melvin (suspension) and the rout seemed to be on.

Why this game landed at #10: First, there’s the stat line. Cotton finished with an efficient 28 points (9-15 from the field, 2-4 from 3, 8-11 at the free throw line) and he dished out six assists. Beyond the numbers, Cotton made big plays when DePaul surged back.

The 16 point lead was cut to just one with 18:08 left in the second half, but Cotton scored five straight points to push the lead to 47-41.

An eight point PC lead was wiped away after DePaul went on an 8-0 with just over seven minutes to play, but once again Cotton countered. This time he found Henton for a layup, then he made a side three that barely moved the net, and he connected on a pair of free throws to make it a seven point game.

With just over a minute left, it was only a four point game, but Cotton closed by scoring nine points in the final minute and threw in a block for good measure.

The spurt included this. So much for unathletic.

With the win, Providence improved to 16-6 and 6-3 in the conference. The 28 points matched a season high at the time, which Cotton reached twice in November (in the opener vs. BC and against Marist).
