Update on Devonte Graham and PC

Perhaps no player had the gym buzzing at last weekend’s National Prep School Invitational more than Brewster Academy point guard Devonte Graham. By now, you most likely know of Graham’s situation and how it could potentially relate to Providence, but if not here’s the abridged version.

Graham signed a letter of intent to play at Appalachian State in the fall of 2012, but saw his stock explode during his senior season. In March he asked for his release because he wanted to play at a higher level, Appalachian State declined, so he headed to Brewster this past fall. App State still has not released Graham from his letter of intent and if he doesn’t get the release he’ll be forced to sit out next season and have three years of college eligibility remaining.

According to several reports this fall, Providence had expressed interest in Graham, who is clearly one of the best point guards in the class of 2014. Since then Graham’s stock has continued to rise, with this weekend only reiterating just how good he is.

After Craig Leighton and I wrote glowing things about him on Monday we’ve received numerous questions on Graham and his level of interest in PC.

I exchanged emails with Brewster head coach Jason Smith who noted that Graham’s situation with Appalachian State hasn’t changed. He won’t be able to speak to any college coaches until App State’s academic year is over in May. While Graham has received “a great deal of interest” from coaches this season, Providence is one of 3-4 schools that Graham is interested in learning more about when he can finally have contact with coaches.

“He’s looking forward to getting to know Coach Cooley and develop a relationship, which unfortunately, he’s unable to do at this point,” Smith wrote.

Make no mistake, this would be a monstrous get for the Friars. After seeing him this weekend the Providence Journal’s Kevin McNamara tweeted that Graham was “the missing piece” in Providence and added he could be a potential star.

I can’t disagree.
