Fortune Resilient in Victory

Fortune_Hoyas

Josh Fortune was playing perhaps his worst game at Providence. Fresh off of Sunday’s drubbing against Villanova in which he played just seven minutes (watching the second half from the bench) the sophomore guard started 0-5 from the field, missing a pair of wild layups. He threw an atrocious pass out of a trap that hung in the air forever before landing squarely in the chest of a Georgetown forward, and he seemed to be questioning himself on the floor — passing up a lane to the rim on a breakout and struggling to find the range on his jumper.

There was nothing in the first 19 minutes and 59 seconds that gave any indication that Fortune would be the one to turn an ugly back and forth affair into a relatively easy victory for the Friars over Georgetown on Wednesday night.

What was the spark?

At one point the seniors got into him, with Bryce Cotton momentarily sniping as the bad cop and Kadeem Batts pulling him aside like a big brother after Fortune dished instead of taking it strong when a lane presented itself.

Perhaps it was the last second layup he made at the end of the first half. “I think it was important for me to see the ball go through the net,” Fortune shared with the press afterwards. After missing his first five attempts, his layup gave PC a 28-23 lead at the intermission — and a boost of confidence for the sophomore.

Then he went off.

Just over two minutes into the second half Fortune connected on a three pointer to give Providence their biggest lead of the game, 35-27. On a night in which seemingly no one could score it felt almost insurmountable, but Georgetown nudged back to within a possession before Fortune connected on his next two attempts — both from three — each coming in a span of 29 seconds. The first basket snapped a 6-0 Hoya run, the second opened it up.

PC scored the game’s next eight points, with Fortune hitting a deep two to cap the 14-0 run — his fifth straight consecutive make going back to the layup at the end of the first half.

“Josh really gave us an incredible boost,” Ed Cooley explained. “I have confidence in Josh. The one thing I know he can do is make shots.”

It wasn’t the only thing Fortune did on Wednesday.

The Hampton, VA native had a season high in both rebounds (9) and assists (5) and matched his season best in three pointers made (3 — which he had in the season opener against Boston College… maybe it’s something about playing in front of Gus and Raff). All of this coming on a night in which his confidence seemed utterly shot throughout the game’s first 20 minutes.

The story of the night is how Providence shook off distractions and an impending sense of doom to defeat Georgetown. It was made possible in large part because Josh Fortune was able to must a little resiliency of his own.
