Kiwi Producing in Limited Minutes

By now, you’ve probably read about Kiwi Gardner’s 23 point explosion in just nine minutes in leading the NBA D-League’s Santa Cruz Warriors back from a 17 point deficit in mid-December.

Minutes have been difficult to come by for Gardner, who has seen over 10 minutes just three times this season, but he had his most productive night in a Dec. 22 victory over the Idaho Stampede with Seth Curry getting a DNP for personal reasons.

Gardner was given 27 minutes and fared well against the Idaho backcourt of Pierre Jackson and Dee Bost, scoring 18 points on 7-11 shooting (1-3 from deep), while grabbing eight rebounds, with four assists and four turnovers in a 95-91 victory. His impressive night is captured in the brief video below.

Full disclosure: I saw Gardner play four games while he was at Westwind Prep, including his breakout in November of his senior year, and while he was certainly thrilling at times, I had serious questions about whether he was too wild to run an offense and didn’t know how he’d defend in the Big East. I figured he’d be very entertaining to watch in Ed Cooley’s first season, and when Kris Dunn arrived the next year he’d see limited court time with Dunn and Vincent Council running the show.

He was a big advocate of Cooley and Providence while here, and has had positive things to say about the program after he left after just one season. It’s nice to see him taking advantage of opportunities.
