Going International for 2014

Providence once again has one of the top recruiting classes in the country, and this time it’s being done with an international flair.

Yesterday, Ben Bentil committed to the Friars, giving PC three recruits who are generally regarded as top 100 players in 2014 in Bentil, Jalen Lindsey and Paschal Chukwu. They’ve also welcomed Cleveland State transfer Junior Lomomba who will first be eligible to play in 2014-15, alongside this recruiting class.

The foursome will play a big role in the next stage of the development of Ed Cooley’s program beginning next year, and what’s interesting about this group is the respective roads each took in getting to Providence.

Lindsey will be the rare Friar out of Tennessee, while Chukwu, Bentil and Lomomba all have roots outside of the United States.

Chukwu, as most Friar fans know, is new to the country, coming to the United States from Nigeria for the educational opportunities.

Bentil, a 3.4 student according to NBE.com, came to the United States from Ghana, while Lomomba is a Canadian whose parents hail from the Republic of Congo.

There’s also a chance Providence will add a fourth international player to this group, as 6’6 Canadian Marial Shayok was on campus this weekend. Like Lomomba, Shayok is from Canada, but his father is an African native (Sudan).

While so much emphasis is placed on the rich New England talent base, Cooley’s program is being built on international players and highly regarded talent from Tennessee, Virginia, Philadelphia, Michigan and New York.
