Ed Cooley Lands Pascal Chukwu

Fairfield Prep center Paschal Chukwu has committed to Providence, making him the highest rated center to pledge to the Friars in well over a decade.

It’s been a whirlwind 12 months for the 7’2 Chukwu, who was a relative unknown as recently as last summer, but is now ranked no lower than in the 60s nationally by every major publication. Just how under the radar was Chukwu? As Craig Leighton pointed out in his Closer Look at Chukwu last November, ESPN didn’t even have a profile on him at the beginning of last season and he had no high major offers throughout much of last summer.
Fortunately for Friar fans, Ed Cooley was one of the first coaches to see Chukwu’s potential after he played well for the Connecticut Basketball Club at the Providence Jamfest in the spring of 2012, and then again at the PC Elite camp a few months later.

In Chukwu Providence gets a high-upside center who has improved dramatically over the past year. He led Fairfield Prep to a 24-3 record and a state championship appearance – a game in which Chukwu finished with 12 points, 16 rebounds and six blocks in a 52-42 loss to Hillside. In the state semifinals he led Prep to a win over East Hartford with a 12 point, 10 rebound, 12 block triple double.

He finished the season averaging 12.8 points and 14 rebounds per game.

Chukwu came to the United States just over three years ago, and had been playing basketball for less than a year upon his arrival, yet now he’s one of the best centers in the class of 2014 and he’s coming to Providence. He’ll be a bit of a project upon his arrival at Smith Hill, but if he continues to improve at the rate in which he has over the past season he could be a contributor at Providence sooner rather than later.
