Friends of Friars Basketball Weekend Events

On a night leading up to what Ed Cooley called “a game changing” weekend for Providence College, former Friar, Ed Gately hosted a group of PC basketball alumni at his home in Rehoboth, MA. As a warm up to the first annual Friends of Friars Basketball Golf Tournament, former players such as Joe Hassett, Harold Starks, Jacek Duda, Bill Eason, John Linehan, Carlton Screen, Ruben Garces, Chris Carter, Kevin Reilly, Al Roth, Dave Kipfer, David Frye, Paul Oristaglio, Mark McAndrew, Matt Palazzi, John Nolan, Jerry Scott, Aubrey Stallworth, Quinton Burton, Sean Canty and Ryan Ford as well as F.O.F.B. Board members, Domenic Coletta, David White, Jim Iacoi, and Ron Greco were all in attendance.

While the grill was cooking up steaks, sausages and hamburgers, Ed Cooley addressed the group and explained how much it means to him that former players get together and remain apart of the Friar family. Cooley went on to add that he welcomes any former player back to campus on any day or time.

The Friends of Friars Basketball group was created earlier this year with the intent to “Bring together members of the Friar Basketball family, including past players, coaches and supporters to bolster the community within the Friar Family through networking, mentoring and charitable donations.” As this barbecue was the tip off for many great get-togethers to come, this first event certainly fulfilled their mission statement. Following conversations of past memories and current endeavors, many of those in attendance made their way over to BLU on the Water, an oceanside bar located in East Greenwich.

The following afternoon, many of the same players and board members as well as over 100 other supporters, gathered at Cranston Country Club for the first annual F.O.F.B. Golf Tournament. Providence College graduate and owner of Cranston Country Club, Mike Lombardi, helped pave the way in making this great event happen. I played in the tournament and I had a great time.

The Friends of Friars Basketball group is going to grow and will grow fast. Both events this past weekend were organized and provided a great experience for all involved. When speaking on how important it is for former players to remain in contact, board member Domenic Coletta exclaimed, “That’s what we are all about!”
