Friar Basketball

A First Look: Robert Johnson

Throughout the 2013-2014 season, Friarbasketball.com will take look at a number of key Friar targets. Our staff will continue to provide in-person reports the top Friar targets all season, and provide updates on prospects that have been previously featured.

Prospect: Robert Johnson

Position: Shooting Guard

School: Benedictine College Prep

AAU Program: Boo Williams

Class: 2014

Overview:

One of the new names to emerge during the first Live Period in July is Robert Johnson out of Benedictine College Prep in Virginia. During the past week Providence has offered, along with a number of other high profile schools including Memphis, Indiana, Georgetown, and Cincinnati. Probably no one’s stock has risen faster during this AAU season than Johnson. He had very nice performances at the NBPA Camp, at Lebron James, and at the EYBL finals at the Peach Jam. He is a knock down shooter who can stretch defenses whenever he is on the court.

What Others Are Saying:
ESPN says that “Johnson is a special scorer. He is slightly undersized, but he can put the ball in the basket and is a good shooter with range to 22 feet. If he is not signed by a high-major school, he will be a steal.”

RIVALS said that “Johnson was one of the players who moved up the most on the charts during the NBPA Camp.” They currently have Johnson ranked 84th in the country.

24/7 Sports says that “there may not be a hotter prospect in the nation than 2014 Richmond (Va.) Benedictine guard Robert Johnson, who has picked up seven offers since last week.” They currently have Johnson ranked 103rd in the country.

SCOUT’s Evan Daniels says that Johnson “is a true combination guard. He has good size, can facilitate if needed, but is also wired up to score points.” Scout currently has him ranked 85th in the country.

The Competition:
In addition to the schools who recently offered, Johnson is being hotly pursued by Villanova and Alabama.

Bottom Line:

Getting Robert Johnson to commit to the Friars after starting so late may be a bit of a long shot, but Ed Cooley is on a roll. Johnson plays AAU for Boo Williams and PC has had recent success with their players (Josh Fortune and Rodney Bullock). Don’t forget that at this time last year Brandon Austin was considered a similar long shot.
