Friars Looking at 2013 Power Forward Kerem Kanter

There has been a lot of speculation recently on whether the Friars are going to add another player to the 2013 recruiting class, particularly after Ricky Ledo declared for the NBA draft. One of the players that the Friar staff is going to take a look at is 6’7 PF Kerem Canter who played last year at Wilbraham & Monson. He is the younger brother of NBA Center Enes Kanter of the Utah Jazz.

Kanter has been a little under the radar for a couple of reasons. Up until January he was a member of the class of 2014, but he decided that he was ready to play college basketball next year and reclassed. As a result, many schools just started looking at him in January. In addition, Wilbraham & Monson is a team that is loaded with high major type prospects and it can be easy to get lost in the shuffle on a prep team that has a lot of talent.

I saw Kanter play a number of times this season. He is not a great athlete, but he does have a lot of basketball skills for his size and position. He is good at finishing close to the basket, has decent range on his shot, and really has a nose for ball on the offensive and defensive boards.

He also has been picking up his game lately. Here is a writeup from NERR from this past Sunday:

Kerem Kanter (ECE Elite Mass u17)- Kanter was a very strong player down low for ECE Mass on Sunday. Carving out space from a variety of angles, he is adept with both hands and a great finisher around the basket. Also a very strong rebounder on the offensive and defensive glass, his 36-point, 17 rebound (six offensive) performance against a very athletic Connecticut Select team was one of the best performances of the playoff.

The Friar staff was going to take a look at him this weekend while his ECE Mass team is playing in the NEHF Championships. If they like what they see he could soon be making a visit to the PC campus. I think he is the type of player that can come in and make a contribution right away next year, particularly underneath with his size and on the glass.

Boston College and Pittsburgh have offered and other schools are getting interested.

   I have seen him described that way before. He is probably a little bit more of a down low player and Georges is a better outside shooter. Geoges is much more of a scorer and a higher talent level but I think Kerem can be a nice high level player.
