Rodney Bullock: Daily Press Player of the Year

A big weekend for Providence’s class of 2013 continued today as Rodney “Rajay” Bullock was named the Daily Press Player of the Year by Dave Johnson.  Bullock won the award over McDonald’s All American guard Anthony Barber, who is headed to North Carolina State last year.

This news comes on the heels of Brandon Austin and Imhotep winning their third straight Pennsylvania state title on Friday night.

Some highlights from the article:

Bullock wins out over Hampton’s Anthony Barber, last season’s winner. Motley, who has no peer on this side of the pond, was your basic slam dunk of a pick.

Bullock, a 6-foot-8 athlete who at times seems more comfortable on the wing than in the post, led the PD in scoring at 21.4 points a game. He also averaged nearly 16 rebounds and two blocked shots.

“He came up a little short in terms of a title, but in terms of evolution, he got better and better each year,” Kecoughtan coach Ivan Thomas said. “This really was his best year. He was more efficient and he meant everything for this team.”

At times, Bullock — or “Rajay,” as he is called — looked to be a reluctant scorer. When he was younger, he often deferred to veterans like Dimitri Batten and Josh Fortune. But as a senior, Bullock became more assertive.

Bullock had two games in particular that produced wow numbers. In a Dec. 18 win over Bethel, he scored a career-high 39 points on 15-of-21 shooting from the field. Two months later in a win over Churchland, according to Kecoughtan’s statistician, he had a career-high 31 rebounds.

“No question, he’s the most skilled big guy I’ve ever coached on the high school level,” Thomas said. “And he’ll get better and better. He’s been underrated on the national level, that’s how I feel.”

Bullock finished his career with 1,778 points, fourth on the Peninsula District’s all-time scoring list and tops among non-guards. Which begs the question: Where does he rank among the best big men to play in the PD?
