Story Highlights Include:

  • Three former Friar Recruits Shine
  • Surprise team from Canada puts on a great show
  • Saturday a big day for PC recruits

Friday marked Day 2 of National Prep School Invitational at Rhode Island College and Friarbasketball.com was on hand to catch some of the action. Below are some quick hits from Friday’s action, along with a preview of Saturday’s games which should be of major interest to Friar fans.

Former PC Recruits Shine

A couple of former PC recruits had great games on Friday leading their teams to victory and winning game MVP awards. Shane Rector (a recent Rutgers commit) of South Kent scored 14 points while adding four assists and three steals in leading South Kent to a 61-50 over Toronto Academy from Canada.

In the 3:00pm game Dayshon Smith (Dayton commit) poured in 24 as Putnam Science Academy scored a 91-83 victory over REDA Academy from Ontario. While all Friar fans are extremely pleased with consensus top 100 combo guard Brandon Austin, these two former Friar recruits should have very nice careers at high major programs (yes, that means I think Dayton will be in PC’s new conference).

Canadian Team Surprises with Athletic Ability

The surprise team of the day for me was Alma Academy out of Quebec, Canada, who cruised to an 80-53 victory over Blair Academy from New Jersey. Alma had several players who demonstrated high major athletic ability and were led by 6’10 Christopher Boucher who won game MVP honors with 29 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocked shots. Undoubtedly the player of the day, Boucher has all the tools (speed, outside touch, hops) but needs to add some serious weight as he is rail thin right now.

Another Player to Watch

During the first game of the day Angel Delgado led Redemption Christian Academy to an 82-79 victory over Rise Academy. The 6’8 215lb junior took home game MVP honors with 21 points. The Dominican Republic native has high major potential and is definitely a player to keep an eye on. Here is a highlight video on Delgado courtesy of Ballas TV:

The Action Really Heats up on Saturday

Day three on Saturday features most of the top teams in the tournament including Cushing Academy, Brewster Academy, Wilbraham & Monson, St. Andrew’s, the Canarias Basketball Academy, Alma Academy, and St. Thomas More.

Many top Friar recruiting prospects will also be playing on Saturday including Kaleb Joseph, Jalen Adams, Matt Cimino, Josh Sharma, Jared Terrell, Kevin Zabo, and Goodluck Okonoboh.

Here is the link to Saturday’s schedule (http://netscoutsbasketball.com/news/national-prep-school-invitational/) along with directions to the Murray Center at Rhode Island College (http://www.ric.edu/aboutRIC/directions.php).  I hope to see many of you there!
