A Closer Look: Alec Brennan

Throughout the 2012-13 season, Friarbasketball.com will take a closer look at a number of key Friar targets. Our staff will continue to provide in-person reports on the top Friar recruits all season, as well as updates on prospects that have been previously featured.

Prospect: Alec Brennan

Position: Power Forward

School: Milton Academy (Massachusetts)

AAU Program: Expressions Elite

Class: 2014

Overview:

The New England Prep Schools are loaded with power forward prospects in the class of 2014. One of the better ones is Alec Brennan of Milton Academy. Brennan is a 6’10 face up four who has a lot of basketball skills for a big man, including a soft shooting touch and keen passing ability. Friar fans will remember that he was on hand for this year’s Late Night Madness.

First Hand Impressions:

One of the first things that impressed me about Brennan at the Providence Jamfest this past April was that he had a very soft shooting touch for a big man. He also showed signs of being a good passer for his size.  Brennan understands the game, is very unselfish, and is always looking for the open man. These qualities would fit in very nicely in an Ed Cooley system.

I felt at that time that he still needed to put in work on his low post moves, and as with most big men his age, put in some time in the weight room. Brennan does have the frame to put on additional weight and really seems to have the work ethic to become a better player. Check out this workout video on Brennan from BallasTV.

AAU Tournaments this Summer:

Brennan continued to show progress and improvement throughout the summer at various AAU and All Star events. He has started to display some nice low post moves, including a jump hook, and he continues to work on his footwork.

The New England Recruiting Report noted this summer that Brennan has become more assertive on the offensive end and improved his rebounding ability.

What Others Are Saying:

ESPN “A very intriguing young prospect because of his size, length, and skill set, Brennan projects as a face-up four-man with a very high upside. He has a soft touch on his jumper and can already stretch opposing defenses out to the three-point line when his feet are set.”

RIVALS “Brennan is in line to be one of the top face-up fours in his class. A high-academic student athlete, Brennan says academics will play a big factor in his decision.” They currently have Alec ranked 130 in their 2014 Top 150 class.

NERR  has Alec ranked no. 8 in New England for the 2014 class. They note “he is a sharpshooting stretch four man, but he is going to make himself much more effective as he develops a go to move around the basket.”

SCOUT “because of athletic limitations moving laterally, Alec might have to play the center position and try to expose slower and stronger defenders. Still, Brennan can score with athleticism around the rim and has a nice stroke from three point range. He has to get stronger and tougher, but at his size with his skill coaches will give him a very long look.”

The Competition

The biggest competition for Brennan may be coming from high academic schools such as Stanford, Harvard, and Northwestern. Other schools involved include Kansas State, Purdue, Temple, and Maryland.

Bottom Line

As noted earlier, Providence College has offered Brennan and he attended PC’s Late Night Madness. As a member of New England’s elite big man class for 2014 the PC staff will continue to monitor and recruit Brennan.
