Friar Basketball

A Closer Look: Jared Terrell

J_terrell_cover

Throughout the 2012-13 season, Friarbasketball.com will take a closer look at a number of key Friar targets. Our staff
will continue to provide in-person reports on these recruits all season, and provide updates on prospects that have been previously featured.

Prospect: Jared Terrell

Position: Shooting Guard

School: Brewster Academy (New Hampshire)

AAU Program: Expressions Elite

Class: 2014

Overview:

Another player from New England that Providence has been following very closely is Jared Terrell from Brewster Academy. During the summer Terrell transferred to Brewster from New Hampton Prep. PC has offered and he has already been on the PC campus a couple of times for unofficial visits. Terrell is close friends with Expressions teammate Abdul Malik Abu and both have talked about going to the same college together. Friar fans would not mind if the address of that college wound up being in Friartown, USA.

First Hand Impressions:

The first thing that strikes you when you see Terrell in person is how physical he is. He looks like a college senior playing against high school kids. At 6’3, 205 pounds he already has a Big East body.

The second thing you notice about him is the way he drives to the basket. When you think of a player that finishes after contact, you think of a player like Jared Terrell. It is not so much that he drives to the basket, rather he explodes there. Terrell combines great athletic ability and a quick first step with pure physical force. Watch this video clip of him going to the basket courtesy of the Hoop Group:

Terrell’s outside shot is still a work in progress. He does have a good shooting form, but when I saw him at the National Prep Invitational this past January his outside shooting was way off. However, a few months later while playing for Expressions at the Providence Jamfest his shot was much better, but still streaky. With time and a great work ethic (which Terrell reportedly has) his outside stroke will continue to improve.

AAU Tournaments this Summer:

Even though Terrell was injured for part of the summer he continued to show improvement in the events in which he was able to play, including the New England Elite 75 and the Reebok Breakout Challenge.

Rivals noted at the Elite 75 that Terrell “once again showed his value on a big stage. The Expressions Elite star has an incredibly built body, enabling him to take defenders to the rim off the dribble, but his effective three-point touch makes him a true inside-out offensive threat.”

At the Reebok Breakout Challenge NERR noted that Terrell “scored the ball at will, not just showing the pull-ups and threes that national evaluators have come to expect from him since his performance in the Nike Top 100 earlier in June, but also getting back to his roots by attacking the rim with strength and athleticism.”

What Others Are Saying:

ESPN says that Terrell “is a power guard with good athleticism and a strong body. He is as aggressive as he is powerful, getting after people on the defensive end and going hard to the rim offensively.” He is currently a four star recruit ranked 46th overall in the 2014 class with a rating of 84.

NERR has Terrell ranked as the top guard in New England and 4th overall in the 2014 class in New England.

SCOUT notes that “Terrell has ability to be a matchup nightmare on the wing and defensively he should be excellent as he learns to give maximum effort on every possession.” They currently have him ranked 24th nationally in the class of 2014 and a four star prospect.

The Competition:

The biggest competition for Terrell seems to be coming from Maryland, Connecticut and Cincinnati. He’s visited Maryland and Connecticut over the summer and Cincinnati has been recruiting him actively since his freshman year.

Other schools involved with him include Temple, Boston College, Kansas, Iowa State, and North Carolina State.

While Terrell and Abu have expressed a desire to play together in college, both have said it will not be a deal-breaker for choosing a school. PC is recruiting both players very hard.

Bottom Line:

Providence College has been recruiting Jared Terrell for a long time. He has been on campus a number of times and the staff has built up a relationship with both him and Abu. PC has good relations with his Expressions AAU team and Terrell is friends with former Expressions player Ricky Ledo. The Friars are going to make recruiting both Terrell and Abdul Malik Abu a high priority for the 2014 recruiting class.

I Want to See for Myself:

For PC fans in the Providence area, Terrell will be at a couple of local events in Rhode Island where you can catch him and his Brewster teammates play including:

St Andrews Hoops Mountain Tournament: December 1:00 pm vs. Worcester Academy

NPSI  Tournament (RIC): February 2 4:30pm  vs. St Thomas Moore

NPSI  Tournament (RIC): February 312:00pm  vs. Vermont Academy
