Ryan Gomes Lands in Germany

It appears, at least for now, that Ryan Gomes’ run in the NBA is over. Having spent 7 years in the league, the 2004 PC graduate was unable to find work for the current season after being let go by the Los Angeles Clippers in mid-July. LA exercised recent provisions to the NBA amnesty rule which allows teams to kick one contract to the curb, relieving themselves of the potential tax burden and get themselves under the salary cap (while still having to pay the player his actual salary). The announcement of Gomes’ signing with the Artland Dragons of the German BEKO BBL league came on Thanksgiving night.

The 6’8 forward joins an Artland team that holds the fourth best record in their league, sitting at 6-3. It has been rumored that Gomes’ inability to stay in shape as well as the December 2011 signing of Caron Butler were the primary reasons for his departure from the Clippers. In his final season with LA, Gomes saw just 10.3 minutes a game while averaging 2.3 points and 1.9 rebounds. The good news for Gomes is that he will not only retain the $4 million that he was due from the Clippers for this season but he will also rake in the money from the Dragons (Contract information has yet to be released).

The last connection the 30-year old Gomes had with an NBA team came in late September, when the Charlotte Bobcats worked him out, but the Bobcats decided to move in a different direction.

The head coach of Artland, Stefan Koch, was quoted in saying, “We are happy that a player of Ryan’s reputation has decided to play for the Dragons. For Ryan, Quakenbrück is his first stop in Europe, and he also will not be in top shape. But he has an excellent reputation as a player and as a person, so we can minimize the risk.” (SBNation.com)
