A Closer Look: Kaleb Joseph

Throughout the 2012-13 season, Friarbasketball.com will take a closer look at a number of key Friar Targets. Our staff will continue to provide in-person reports the top Friar targets all season, and provide updates on prospects that have been previously featured.

Prospect: Kaleb Joseph

Position: Point Guard

School: Cushing Academy (Mass)

AAU Program: Mass Rivals

Class: 2014

Overview:

One of the players in New England for 2014 that has been on PC’s radar for quite a while is Kaleb Joseph of Cushing Academy. PC has offered and will continue to recruit Joseph throughout the season. Recently, he took an unofficial visit to Providence for the Mal Brown Scrimmage.

This Past Year:

I have seen Joseph play numerous times over the course of the past year at such events as the St. Andrew’s Christmas Tournament, the National Prep Showcase at Rhode Island College, and at the Providence Jamfest. He has continued to impress with his athletic ability, ball-handling skills and desire to facilitate as a playmaker to make his teammates better.

Although Joseph is projected as a point guard in college, at this point in his career he is probably more of a combo guard. He has the size (6’3) to fit right in with Cooley’s philosophy of having tall point guards. Joseph is still thin at probably 165-170 pounds, but should be able to put on more weight quite easily with his frame.

One thing he has shown as the year progressed was constant improvement and a desire to win. I noted during the Providence Jamfest that Joseph would demand the ball whenever the game was on the line.

Last summer’s AAU Events:

Joseph really improved his stock this past summer during several AAU tournaments while playing for the Mass Rivals team. As the summer progressed he really improved his playmaking skills and his ability to create offense for his teammates.

In Las Vegas the Rivals scouting service noted that Joseph “has added a little more burst since we last saw him in the spring and is also finding a nice blend of getting his own offense and creating for others.”

At Addidas, NERR noted that he “was impressive in showing his ability to play a complementary backcourt role and was consistently effective in raising the level of play of his teammates.”

The Providence staff was watching the Mass Rivals team very closely this summer, as someone from the PC staff was at most, if not all, of their games. In addition, Providence hosted the Mass Rivals Basketball Club this past June on the PC campus. It is safe to say that at this point PC is very involved with Joseph.

What Others Are Saying:

ESPN says that Joseph ”has a good looking shooting stroke off both the catch and the dribble, sees the court well, and plays very unselfishly. He projects as a major defensive weapon down the road as well with his quickness and long arms.”  They have him rated as a four star recruit with an 80 grade.

RIVALS notes that Kaleb “has good size, is athletic, and knows how to pass the ball. Now he does like to shoot, and a clean look is one he will take, but also Joseph is a willing passer.”  Rivals has Joseph ranked 61st in the 2014 class and a four star recruit

NERR  has Joseph ranked as the top point guard in New England  and number 5 overall in the 2014 class for New England.

SCOUT says that Joseph is “crafty, quick and knows how to create for his teammates with impressive physical attributes and he can score it at a high level.” They have Joseph ranked 59th in the 2014 class and also have him as a four star recruit.

The Competition:

Maryland seems to be quite involved with Joseph, as they are with a lot of PC’s 2014 recruits. They are starting to become like Iowa State in this regard.

Other schools involved with Joseph include Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Cincinnati, Georgetown, and Temple. Joseph is in no rush to make a decision and wants to concentrate on basketball this season, so don’t expect him to trim his list of schools anytime soon.

Bottom Line:

Kaleb Joseph is going to be one of PC’s primary targets for the 2014 class. His size and style of play will be a perfect fit for Ed Cooley’s system. The Friars have been on him from the beginning and I would be shocked if the PC is not on his final list of three or four schools. Another high character kid, Joseph would make a great addition to the Friar program.

I Want to See for Myself:

For PC fans in the Providence area, Joseph will be at a few local events where you can catch him and his Cushing teammates play including:

St Andrews Hoops Mountain Tournament  Nov 30th 5:00 pm vs. Marianapolis Prep

St Andrews Hoops Mountain Tournament  Dec 2nd 4:30 pm vs. Wibraham & Monson

St Andrews Christmas Tournament  Dec 14th

St Andrews Christmas Tournament  Dec 15th vs. Christian Heritage

NPSI  Tournament (RIC) Jan 31st  vs. Brighton Academy

Can a team that has landed back-to-back stud points in Dunn and Austin really convince another one to jump on-board? Selfishly, I’d love to see it but hard to figure how the kid buys in.
