Sidiki Touches on his Eligibility, Versatility and (no) Rust

Perhaps the most entertaining interview from media day came in the form of Sidiki Johnson, the Arizona transfer who is still holding out hope that he will be eligible for the first semester.  The Friars could use him.  The one-time top 100 recruit could potentially be the type of physical presence the Friars lack on the interior.  What type of role Johnson takes in 2012-13 should make for one of the more intriguing angles this year, as he was knocked in some corners in Arizona for floating to the perimeter, and he’ll be sorely needed on the inside at PC.

He shared his thoughts on his role this season, the adjustment to Providence and how he sees himself as a matchup problem at last week’s media day on campus.

Here’s an enthusiastic Sidiki on a variety of topics:

On the adjustment from Arizona to Providence: “It’s been great.  The people here are so lovely.  I really do like it here a lot.  It’s a great atmosphere and a great campus.  I can’t wait until I step out on that court – hopefully it’s October 27 – but I just can’t wait.”

When asked if there was any update on his potential first semester eligibility he nodded towards Ed Cooley on his left and said “you’ll have to ask him about that” before saying that he was still awaiting final word.

On his game: “I’m a versatile player.  I’m a matchup nightmare.  I can match up with anybody on the court.”

On his new teammates: “My teammates are great – great.  I love them all.  They bring it every day.”

On rust being a potential factor after missing most of his senior season of high school due to injury and nearly all of last year following his transfer: “Ain’t no rust.  This is what I do.”

On his role this season: After mentioning that he’ll play wherever the coaching staff wants him to, including guarding guards if he has to, he was pushed further on his role and noted: “I’ll be playing inside-outside.  I’m very versatile, but it will mostly be on the inside.”
