A Look Back: Cotton Keys Late Win Over Rutgers

Council_Rutgers

After Providence blew out Louisville in January they were unable to build any momentum in a difficult four game stretch that followed.  Vincent Council did not play in a no-contest loss at Syracuse, Marquette pulled away late in an exciting 79-72 win over PC at the Dunkin Donuts Center, and then a pair of road losses followed as Pittsburgh broke through versus PC, while a record-setting afternoon for LaDontae Henton was for naught in an 81-78 loss to South Florida in Tampa.

When Rutgers came to town on February 1 Providence had one of their best offensive outbursts of the season, ripping off a 25-5 run on their way to building a 40-25 lead just before halftime.

Vincent Council dominated for the Friars early with an 11 point, 10 assist double double in the first half alone.

The Friars led by 13 with just over 11 minutes to play, but the offense went cold, scoring only one field goal in a seven minute span which allowed Rutgers to get back to within four at 64-60 with 2:34 to play.

That’s when Bryce Cotton stepped up to save the game for Providence.

The sophomore guard nailed three pointers on consecutive possessions (at the 2:15 and 1:54 marks) to push the lead back to 10 at 70-60, sealing the game for the Friars.

Cotton finished the night with 17 points on 5-10 from three point range, Council had 14 assists, Henton just missed his own double double with 15 points and nine rebounds, while now former Friars Gerard Coleman and Bilal Dixon were solid, as Coleman ended up with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Dixon led the team in scoring with 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
