A Look Back: Georgetown Bests Providence in a Grind
- Updated: October 24, 2012
It’s easy to forget where this program was just ten months ago. After Providence was blown out by St. John’s in their Big East opener they headed to Georgetown hoping to avoid their seventeenth straight road loss in conference play.
Following a pair of seasons in which the Friars played no defense, they were lit up by a green St. John’s group and it looked as though the #12 Hoyas, winners of nine straight coming in, would continue the trend on New Year’s Eve.
Georgetown jumped out to a 17-4 lead early, as Providence was unable to mount any semblance of offense in what turned out to be a 19 point first half.
Behind a surprisingly solid defensive effort, the Friars found a way to stay close despite shooting 25% from the field (an all-time Big East low for PC), 23% from three and 55% at the free throw line. Georgetown wasn’t much better, shooting 30% from the field and 17% from deep.
Providence got to within a point behind a beautiful pass from Vincent Council to LaDontae Henton (in video) with 4:30 left, but were held scoreless the rest of the way en route to falling 49-40.
Council struggled from the field (4-15), Bryce Cotton went 2-8, and Kadeem Batts 1-8, but it was a turning point for many Friar fans in respect to Gerard Coleman who struggled through the worst game of his college career, shooting 1-10 from the field and 1-8 at the free throw line.
Despite the horrid shooting night, many in Providence were encouraged by an overdue defensive effort. Ed Cooley called it the first time in his Providence tenure that the Friars gave a full 40 minute effort.
