Learning More about Bullock from Virginiapreps.com

In an effort to learn more about Rodney Bullock I reached out to Matthew Hatfield of Virginapreps.com (part of the Rivals network).  Matthew has covered both high school football and basketball in Virginia since 2004, appears weekly on the local Cox affiliate and is an on-air personality for ESPN 94.1 in the Norfolk area.  He’s seen, and reported on, Bullock on a number of occasions and here is what he had to say about the future Friar.  The scouting report from his site is attached at the bottom.

“(Bullock is) a versatile, multi-skilled forward.  His coach, Ivan Thomas, is dead on in describing him as a ‘4’ who can do some ‘3’ things.  At 6-7, he can put the ball on the floor impressively.

I’ve seen him have a triple-double in some games and dominate, but I’ve also seen him play at less than 100% and sometimes not look real inspired.  On talent, he’s a Top 150 player in the nation, and a possible steal for Providence if they tap into what he can be and he plays hard on a consistent basis.

I’ve made the statement to people that out of the Peninsula District, where you had the two mega names in Anthony Barber and Troy Williams, that Rajay is the most skilled of the three.  Not the best.  Cat Barber is the quickest and best of the three, Troy is the most athletic, but Rajay has the best skill-set in my opinion in that he can shoot, is terrific passer, has decent handles, length, and can be a mismatch problem.”

Hatfield’s scouting report

Rajay Bullock, 6’7” F Kecoughtan (2013) – – One can easily make the argument that Bullock helped his stock more than any other Boo Williams prospect and had the best performance in five games (Kevin note: at the Peach Jam in July).  From an efficiency standpoint, it was hard to find someone better as he shot 69% from the floor, though he averaged less than eight shots per game.  On offense, he’s a threat from the foul line area and can stretch the defense with the elbow jumper.  Maybe the most underrated part of his game is how good of a passer he is, recognizing cutters and open shooters on the wing when they are there.

There were moments where he was as little jittery at times on defense, but his length and height allow him to guard either forward spot, and to challenge shots inside or outside the paint area.  When Bullock’s motor is going, he’s a force.  A skilled force, too.  Understanding what his position will be as well as the little nuances of the game is going to be the key as to how successful he is at the next level.  Additionally, between now and the start of his freshman year of college, how serious he gets about the weight room to develop a next-level body will determine if he’s an immediate impact performer or not.
