Cooley’s Early Trip to Brewster, Vonleh Reclassifies

Brewster Academy head coach Jason Smith and assistant/strength and conditioning coach Josh Lee both tweeted this morning that Ed Cooley was on their campus this morning for a 6am workout.  Smith noted that Cooley is the only D1 coach to make it up to Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.  He had to have been up early, as Wolfeboro is a solid three hour ride from Rhode Island and Smith noted that Cooley did not stay at a local hotel.

The Bobcats have a pair of guards Providence is targeting in former Indiana commit Ron Patterson (now part of the class of 2013) and Massachusetts guard Jared Terrell (2014).  Two years ago Eli Carter’s (Rutgers) stock took off at Brewster after his wrapping up his career at St. Anthony in New Jersey, while last year it was Aaron Thomas (Florida State) who was an eye opener.  While Patterson was already a high level recruit when he committed to Indiana, he could be the next in line to see his stock go to the next level at Brewster.  Below is a video from Hoop Dreams of a Brewster workout this month.

Patterson (gray t-shirt) is featured around the 4:15 mark.

What had been rumored in local circles for months became a reality today, as New Hampton forward Noah Vonleh reclassified to the class of 2013.  Vonleh transferred to New Hampton a year ago, reclassifying to 2014, after spending two seasons at Haverhill High School in Massachusetts.  After a solid season at New Hampton and an even better AAU circuit this summer, Vonleh is back to the class of 2013.

From what I was told this summer, I wouldn’t expect to see too many more fifth year players on the New Hampton roster.  Terrell was at New Hampton for a season, reclassifying to the class of 2014 upon enrolling last year, but is now at Brewster.

Vonleh, of course, is a versatile 6’8 forward reminiscent of former Georgetown forward Jeff Green – a player capable of grabbing 15 rebounds, beating his man off the dribble and a terrific passer for his size.  He certainly had his big games at New Hampton a season ago, but at 16 he was younger than many of the kids he went up against and did not dominate on a game to game basis.  It will be interesting to see if he takes his game to the next level in his second year against prep competition.

Providence has been mentioned with him in the past, but the competition will be as heavy as it gets.  Vonleh is set to narrow a current list of approximately 15 schools and start scheduling visits for this fall.  He told ESPN that North Carolina, Indiana and Ohio State have recruited him harder than any other school.
