Report: Virginia Forward Rodney Bullock to Visit PC, Matthews to URI

Ed Miller of Hamptonroads.com reported today that long-time Providence prospect Rodney Bullock is scheduled to visit Providence next weekend according to Boo Williams, his AAU coach.

Bullock is a former high school and AAU teammate of Providence freshman Josh Fortune.  He’s a 6’7 combo forward who is reportedly a tenacious, albeit slender, rebounder who could potentially develop into a good shooter at the next level.

Over the past two seasons I’d been in contact with Dave Johnson of the Hampton Daily Press to get information on Fortune.  Johnson has covered high school basketball in the area for over 20 years – an area deep with talent, including NC State commit Anthony Barber and elite wing Troy Williams.

Johnson provided an update on Bullock back in his sophomore year and again last season.  Here is what he noted back then.

From January 12, 2011 –

Another sophomore I understand the Friars are recruiting is 6-7 sophomore Rodney Bullock, Fortune’s teammate at Kecoughtan. Bullock is still growing and could end up 6-9 or so. Has outstanding skills, both in the post and on the perimeter. He is averaging 19.4 ppg and roughly 12 rpg, with a nice three point shot. In fact, if the district had a 3-point contest like the NBA All-Star game, my money would be on him. He needs to get bigger (I’m guessing he’s 210 lbs) and stronger, but he’s only 15.

From January 9, 2012 –

The last I heard, Bullock has been offered by Virginia Tech and N.C. State. Providence I know is very interested. He’s an interesting prospect. He’s listed at 6-7 and he has long arms, but he’s very lean, so I see him as a 3 in college. He doesn’t get as much attention as Phoebus’ Troy Williams and Hampton’s Anthony Barber, who are rated No. 8 and 23, respectively, in the Class of 2013, but he still has another summer and another full season to work on his strength.

Update: late-breaking on Saturday, Michigan guard EC Matthews, a Friar target has committed to Rhode Island.  Matthews was a prospect Providence visited early in the first week of the September visiting period, but now they’ll have to face him for four years.

This is the second very good prospect in two years the Rams have inked from Michigan, after 6’9 jumping jack Jordan Hare pledged a year ago.  With the addition of Rutgers transfer Gil Biruta, Rhode Island is building a solid core for 2013-14.  Matthews’ verbal comes on the heels of a Friday visit from guard Jon Severe and Hassan Martin of New York.
